BREAST CANCER

I found out today that my mom has breast cancer. It is only in the first stages. For some strange reason it took her doctor 4 weeks to get back to her to tell her she had cancer. That did not set well with us one bit. She will have a masectomy on Monday. My mom always downplays everything. She doesn't want us to worry. She says, "Oh, I'm not worried about this, they'll do the surgery and it will be okay. This is very routine." She doesn't want us to worry and she doesn't want my dad to worry. But that doesn't make it so. Mom opted to only have a single masectomy. I think I'd just go ahead and have a double if it was me. I couldn't deal with the whole cyclops look. Mom is 83. If I was 83 and found out I had breast cancer in the early stages, I hope I would be as positive and non-chalant as she is about it. She always tells us she doesn't want to be 90. But then again, does anyone hope to live to 90 years of age? Why?

I have had cervical cancer removed and I think I was pretty nonchalant about it. It came back after the first time, so I had a hysterectomy the second time. I was OK with that, six children is enough!! But, I didn't require chemo or radiation because it was caught fast enough. I pray hers it the same... and it is gone with the surgery!!

I would not mind living to be 90 years old, so long as I wasn't shoved off to the corner of some delapidated nursing home and forgotten about. I would like seeing my descendants grow... plus you can go around doing all kinds of stuff and getting away with it. People would NEVER say anything to you because you are so old, they would just assume you didn't realize... for example:
* You could fart out loud.
* You could loudly make fun of someone or express you opinion out loud so everyone could hear you. (ie... young man, you have your dad's pants on... they are about to fall off!! Did you know that?)
* You could just walk to the front of a long line. People will just let you because you are so old that they figure you would not live long enough to wait. This would be especially useful the day after Thanksgiving.
* You could get a handicapped sticker so you can park close to the stores.

The possibilities are endless, and you can live long enough to torture your kids... PAYBACKS!!!

I have watched several programs about breast cancer, and I think she is doing the best treatment. I don't know why, but I'm not worried either. I think she will do well in the surgery, and she has a really great attitude, which is very influential in treatment. I asked what stage of cancer this is, but she didn't know. But she did say that it was early, so I'm assuming it is like stage one or two. That is highly treatable. I'm thankful she found it now! The rest of us need to keep careful watch on ourselves.

a double mastectomy would be harder on her body and harder for her to recover from...

I'm sorry she has it and has to go through that. For some reason, I'm not too worried either. I hope and pray everything will turn out well, and we all know how spunky she is, she's definitely a fighter. :)

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who isn't panicky about this. For some reason, I've only been a little bit nervous about how she'll recover from the mastectomy. It sounds like they caught it early, so she should be fine. I really hope I'm right.

I'm nervous about it.
I don't care how old someone gets, I don't want to lose them.

I think I'm not as nervous about it, because she's lived a vibrant life. She's still doing what she wants and is in pretty good health, which I think will help her recover quickly. She's a fighter, she'll beat it, I'm sure.
